for the exhibition "How to Dior - Dior and his successors" at the "Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe" in Berlin, I created 30 collages, which depicted Christian Dior's life story, life path and key elements.
Christian Dior´s favorite number was 8. He was superstitious when it comes to touching wood or astrology.
His Home in Granville, where he used to take care of the flowers in the garden.
He started as a Fashion Illustrator on the streets of Paris.
Surrealism was a big Inspiration for him and his work. Dali and Picasso were good friends of him.
He became a quite recognized Illustrator and was featured by the Figaro Illustré.
With the Great Depression there came also hate speech against Christian Diors clothes. Some were convinced by the thought, that his dresses were too feminin, too lady like, that we was using so much fabric. After the war nobody did that. everything needed to be practical due to the lack of resources but he embraced the beauty of getting dressed.
In his first own exhibition room, he mainly showed surreal art from artists like Dali, Frida Kahlo or Picasso.
The Parfum was named after his sister who got arrested and brought to a concentration camp during the war.
The protests against him and his work kept going, so did he.
Christian Dior happily in his atelier, in his element. Financed by the gentlemen in the foreground.
He believed in astrology and in every word his fortune teller told him. He consulted her on a daily basis. Before fashion shows, during the process. Whenever.
Flowers were a main source of his inspiration. So many layers, so powerful, yet so fragile. So beautiful, so feminin.
With a little financial injection Christian Dior managed to build brand and make himself a name.
Probably his most famous silhouette.
His first collection "la line corolle". Of course inspired by: flowers.
He didn't like to be looked while working on projects, concepts or designs. Except for his fortune teller, another superstition of Christian's.
Before/During a Show.
Harpers Bazar wrote about him and finally his looks are getting accepted in society and women are allowed to feel like beautiful women again. The "New Look" was born.
The Evolution of the legendary "New Look".
He kept a close friendship with England and Princess Margaret.
He dressed countless icons and his influent became bigger and bigger.
His first Fashion Show in Hamburg. 1949 (?)
He made the costumes for a Russian ballet. A big honor.
A green marble bath. Yes. That was his favorite, with the view towards a flower field.
Wherever he ws, he was surrounded by flowers.
The famous Lady Di Bag, named after Lady Diana.
He couldn't enjoy much of his success.
Shortly after celebrating 10 years Dior, he passed away. Some say he choked on a fish bone, some say he had a heart attack, other say he was sick and fell asleep.
Young Yves Saint Laurent took over his brand. He discovered Yves quite early, saw his potential and took him under his wing.
I created my very first mini collection containing 5 looks. this is the belonging to moodboard. the collection included puffer, industrial stitching which defined the puffer in new shapes, cut outs and serpentine-like seam patterns. the color palette was kept very dark, so that the skin under the cut outs was the only visual eye-catcher
